Ace Tennis Club 2010 Tennis Tournament
Here are the details of the Singles tournament. The results of the Singles tournament will be used to form the teams for Doubles tournament.
There are a total of 16 contestants. The 16 will be divided into 2 groups of 8 each (a method for forming the group of 8 is outlined below). Each group will go through a round robin schedule to select the top 4. The top 4 of each group will play with each other once. The top 4 among this 8 will go to semi-finals. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and the 2 semi-final losers.
The bottom 4 of each group will play against each other to determine 1 to 8 rankings. The top 2 in this bottom 8 will get prizes. Unlike the top 8, there won't be semi-finals/Finals for the bottoms. The 1 to 8 rankings in the bottom group will be used to select doubles partners with 8th ranked player getting the first chance to pick a player in the top 8 to be his partner followed by the 7th ranked player and so on.
Methodology for forming the 2 groups:
Last year champions Binu and Raman will head group A and B respectively. They will alternatively select a player whom they would not want to play and put him in the other group until both the group have 8 players each. Who goes first will be determined by toss. For this to happen, it is important that the new players should play with Binu and Raman at least once in the next 2-3 weeks.
Round Robin:
With two 8 person groups, each group will have to play 7 rounds.
Venue:
Group A matches will be played in American High.
Group B matches will be played in Mission Courts.
Second round involving the top 8 will be played in Mission Courts. Semi-finals and Finals will also be played there.
Second round involving the bottom 8 will be played in American High. There will be no Semi-finals/finals for the bottom 8. The top 2 in the bottom 8 will get prizes.
Scoring:
Each win will get 4 points for the player.
A loss will get 1 point if the loser loses in 3 sets and 0 if he loses in straight sets.
This scoring methodology is used to add an additional variable that can help avoid ties. In the event there is a tie, the tie will be broken using the following scheme:
1) 2-way ties: the winner of the earlier match between the 2 players will go through.
2) 3-way ties: ?
Points earned in the first round will be carried forward to second round. Not all of them but the ones that you earn against the other 3 qualifiers. Suppose A1, A2, A3 and A4 top group A. If A1 has wins against A2, A3, and A4, he will carry forward 12 points to second round. If A4 has 3 losses against A1, A2, and A3 in 3 sets, he will carry forward 3 points to second round. The same thing will apply to the bottom 4.
